October 2026 | Vol. 1, Issue 6
Mapping the intersection of medicine and venture capital across the Texas Triangle.
Executive Summary
After August's quiet rhythm, September brought the Texas health-tech ledger back into motion, though the biggest story is still one that hasn't closed. Dallas-based Colossal Biosciences' reported talks, first surfaced in July at a $20 billion to $30 billion valuation, sharpened on September 30, when Axios Pro reported that the company is in discussions to raise at a $25 billion to $26 billion valuation led by existing investor TWG Global, the firm headed by Mark Walter. The round has not been confirmed or closed, and it would value Colossal at roughly two and a half times the $10.2 billion mark it set sixteen months ago.
On the financing side that did close, Austin's Tiny Health raised an oversubscribed $33 million Series B led by B Capital to scale its at-home microbiome testing platform and its B2B arm, Powered by Tiny. In Houston, sleep-apnea diagnostics startup Bairitone Health closed a $2.4 million seed round led by Golden Seeds, a small but telling follow-on to August's sleep-tech headlines. On the M&A side, Fortrea agreed to acquire Worldwide Clinical Trials' Early Phase Services division for roughly $45 million, a deal that moves a bioanalytical lab in Austin, a 200-bed clinical pharmacology unit in San Antonio, and a biospecimen facility in Pflugerville into a new owner's hands. In Houston, health-IT vendor Symplr reportedly lined up about $175 million in preferred equity from existing investors as part of a debt restructuring.
Institutional capital set the tone for much of the month. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center won a five-year, $24.5 million NIH grant, the largest in the Texas Tech system's history. Governor Abbott announced $51 million in first-round Rural Texas Strong awards, and the North Texas Maternal Health Accelerator secured just over $4 million in state funding. CPRIT, meanwhile, kept its platform transition on schedule: its FY2027 Catalyst Pilot and Clinical Investigator award cycles opened September 16 through the new Grant Management Platform, with applications due November 18 and the legacy systems still set to retire in January 2027.
Macro Signals
Colossal Biosciences' reported round narrows to $25B-$26B, with TWG expected to lead
Axios Pro reported on September 30 that Colossal Biosciences is in talks to raise new funding at a $25 billion to $26 billion valuation, led by TWG Global, an existing investor helmed by Mark Walter. That is a narrowing of the $20 billion to $30 billion range first reported in July, and it would put the Dallas de-extinction company at roughly two and a half times the $10.2 billion valuation set in its January 2025 Series C, which TWG also led. The round size has not been disclosed, and as of this writing the deal has not closed.
The Signal: A narrower range and a named lead moves this from rumor toward term sheet, but two caveats matter for anyone tracking the story. First, nothing is signed or announced by the company. Second, TWG has been the subject of recent reporting on a U.S. Department of Justice probe into Walter's broader holdings, which Bloomberg reported has delayed a separate proposed $10 billion tie-up with Mubadala's asset-management arm; TWG has publicly disputed what it called attacks from unnamed sources. Nothing in that reporting concerns Colossal directly, but it is a diligence item worth watching as the round develops. Beyond the lead investor, the valuation case continues to rest on the platform thesis: Colossal says it has begun generating revenue and has spun out Form Bio, Breaking and Astromech, the last of which has reportedly been revalued at $3.8 billion following a recent $20 million raise led by ARCH's Bob Nelsen. Revisit once terms are confirmed.
Tiny Health's $33M Series B signals investor appetite for consumer-to-clinical diagnostics
Austin-based Tiny Health, which sells at-home gut and vaginal microbiome tests, announced an oversubscribed $33 million Series B led by B Capital on September 29, with participation from existing investors Spero Ventures, The Venture City and Overwater Ventures, plus new investors including Black Opal Ventures, Denver Ventures, Pave Health Ventures and Alumni Ventures. The round brings total funding to $46 million, following a $4.5 million seed in 2021 and an $8.5 million Series A in late 2023. Proceeds will fund clinical and interventional research, practitioner education, the Powered by Tiny B2B platform, and TinyAI, a model trained on nearly 200,000 microbiome profiles. The company is also committing $5 million to a Microbiome Research Program.
The Signal: Tiny Health's CEO told Crunchbase News that revenue has more than doubled each year and that the B2B arm grew fourfold last year, a mix that echoes the consumer-hardware-meets-clinical-pathway pattern seen in Happy Health's August raise and Throne Science's July Series A, also Austin-based. The differentiator investors appear to be paying for is evidence: the company says it is the only gut microbiome player with a published interventional randomized controlled trial, and it has a second trial underway. The valuation was not disclosed, though the CEO said it was "much higher" than at the Series A.
Public and federal dollars concentrate in rural and community health
Three announcements in the final two weeks of September point the same direction. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center received a five-year, $24.5 million NIH U54 cooperative agreement, the largest NIH grant in the Texas Tech University System's history, to build research infrastructure across the 121-county region it serves. Governor Abbott announced $51 million in federal funding for the first round of Rural Texas Strong awards, administered through HHSC to rural hospital districts and authorities for prevention, wellness and nutrition programs. In Fort Worth, the North Texas Maternal Health Accelerator announced just over $4 million from an HHSC Maternal Health Outcomes Program grant, reportedly 80 percent of the funds available in that program's first cycle.
The Signal: None of this is venture capital, but it shapes the market venture-backed companies sell into. Rural and maternal health programs increasingly come with funded infrastructure, which is where remote monitoring, care-coordination software and diagnostics startups find pilot customers. The Maternal Health Accelerator's sponsors have also signaled they will lobby in the 2027 legislative session for additional support, a thread worth following into next year.

Seed & Early Stage Rounds
Bairitone Health (Houston), Seed, $2.4 million
The Houston healthtech startup closed an oversubscribed $2.4 million seed round, exceeding its $2 million goal, led by New York-based Golden Seeds with participation from Houston's South Loop Ventures, MALIAM, Impact Invest Her and additional angels and family offices. Bairitone, founded in 2022 in the Texas Medical Center's Biodesign program, is developing SOMNAR, a noninvasive diagnostic platform that uses a facial patch to map a patient's airway during natural sleep and identify the root cause of obstruction, then recommend matched therapies. It previously raised a $435,000 pre-seed in 2024. Proceeds will fund clinical site expansion, FDA-facing work and continued product development.
The Signal: Sleep has become a recurring thread in Texas health tech. Where Happy Health's August Series A bets on a wearable that diagnoses and treats at home, Bairitone is working on the upstream question of why a given patient's airway collapses, and its raise suggests early-stage investors see room for diagnostic precision around a condition that remains widely untreated.
MusiQ Bio (Dallas), CPRIT grant, $2.59 million
UT Southwestern spinout MusiQ Bio was awarded a $2.59 million CPRIT grant to advance MUSIC, a platform that uses ultrasound-guided microbubbles to deliver a STING-pathway activator into tumors. The company says the funding could bring the platform to first-in-human trials within five years, and it plans to study the approach across additional cancers, including melanoma, pancreatic cancer and glioblastoma. Non-dilutive funding of this kind remains one of Texas's structural advantages for therapeutic spinouts at the earliest stages.
Series A/B Rounds
Tiny Health (Austin) – $33 million Series B
Led by B Capital, whose Nick Whitehead joins the board, the oversubscribed round funds a push from consumer testing into clinical research and provider channels. Management says its in-house bioinformatics pipeline and proprietary dataset, nearly 200,000 microbiome profiles, are the foundation for TinyAI, which will deliver personalized guidance tied to a user's results. Planned research areas include IBD, menopause, GLP-1 response and oncology drug response. See Macro Signals above for analysis.
Growth / Late-Stage Rounds
(In Motion) Colossal Biosciences (Dallas), reported $25B-$26B valuation talks
Per Axios Pro, Colossal is in talks to raise new funding at a $25 billion to $26 billion valuation led by TWG Global. The company has not announced a round, and size and timing remain undisclosed. See Macro Signals above.
Symplr (Houston), reported ~$175 million preferred equity in debt restructuring
Houston-based healthcare enterprise software company Symplr reportedly secured commitments from existing investors Clearlake Capital and Charlesbank Capital Partners for roughly $175 million in preferred equity as part of a restructuring. Separately, second-lien lenders including Ares Capital plan to provide $103.5 million in fresh money, and first-lien maturities would be extended by three years at higher interest rates. The company's roughly $1.2 billion first-lien loan was quoted near 71 cents on the dollar, and Moody's downgraded the company in July citing elevated restructuring risk. The financing is a distressed-capital story rather than a growth round, and it is a reminder that AI-disruption concerns have pressured credit for health-IT software as well as equity.
Exits & M&A
Fortrea to acquire Worldwide Clinical Trials' Early Phase Services division (~$45 million)
On September 2, Fortrea (Nasdaq: FTRE) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Worldwide's Early Phase Services division in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $45 million. The assets include a 60,000-square-foot GLP-compliant bioanalytical laboratory in Austin, a 200-bed GCP-compliant clinical pharmacology unit in San Antonio, and a biospecimen storage facility in Pflugerville. The business will fold into Fortrea's Clinical Pharmacology Services unit and bring its global bed capacity to 576. Barclays advised Fortrea, and BroadOak Partners advised Worldwide. The agreement was signed rather than closed as of the announcement.
The Signal: The deal is a quiet validation of Central Texas as an early-phase clinical-trial hub, with lab, bed and storage capacity located within a short drive of one another. For startups building early-phase and bioanalytical services, an acquirer paying to consolidate that front end is a data point on how the sector values it, even at a modest ticket.
Regulatory & Institutional Notes
CPRIT opens FY2027 cycles through the new Grant Management Platform
CPRIT opened applications on September 16 for its FY2027 Catalyst Pilot Research Award (up to $250,000 over two years) and Clinical Investigator Award (up to $1.5 million over five years). Both are due November 18, 2026, with review running from December through May 2027 and award notifications in May 2027. Applications are submitted through the new Grant Management Platform. CPRIT has said its post-award management and peer-reviewer modules will launch in January 2027, at which point the legacy CARS, P2RMIS and CGMS systems retire. Grantee organizations should plan training time now, since the new platform replaces three systems rather than migrating them like-for-like.
Texas Tech's record NIH award and state rural-health funding
The TTUHSC U54 award is structured as an institutional center grant rather than a single-project grant, meaning it builds a research center with dedicated staff and community engagement across West Texas. Separately, HHSC's Rural Texas Strong first round distributes $51 million of federal funding to rural hospital districts and authorities, and the Maternal Health Outcomes Program's first awards went largely to the North Texas accelerator led by MHMR of Tarrant County.
